The original library consisted of a 150,000 square foot, four story building. The addition added 110,000 square feet to the existing structure. The program plan proposed that an addition to the Morgan Library be constructed to house 80% of all books, journals, and document collections as projected for the year 2005 and all non-print format collections to that year. The shelving plan for the facility includes a majority of the collections on standard library shelving to enable direct patron browsing of high-use collections and bound journal volumes which do not require as much browsing.

The focus of LOA Architecture's design was to allow the existing facility and the addition to function and read as coherent whole, with effective and flexible use of library space.
